But what happens when that peaceful moment turns into itchy, red skin?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You could be dealing with a <strong>sun allergy<\/strong>, a skin reaction that\u2019s more common than you might think. In fact, it\u2019s estimated that up to <a href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/full\/10.1111\/j.1600-0781.2008.00343.x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">20% of people<\/a> experience some form of sun-related skin reaction, especially at the start of spring and summer. While these reactions are usually not serious, they can be uncomfortable\u2014and confusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what is a sun allergy, really? And how is it different from a sun rash?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We spoke with <strong>Chiyoung Kang Park, Medical Marketing Specialist at ISDIN<\/strong>, to better understand what\u2019s happening in the skin, who\u2019s most at risk, and how to help prevent it\u2014without missing out on the sunshine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s take a closer look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-what-is-a-sun-allergy\">What is a sun allergy?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Chiyoung starts by clearing up a common misconception:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThe term sun allergy actually includes several different conditions. But when people talk about a sun allergy or sun rash, they\u2019re usually referring to a very common reaction called polymorphous light eruption, or PLE.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, <em>sun allergy<\/em> is an umbrella term, while <em>sun rash<\/em> is often how people describe what they see on their skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the difference between a sun rash and a sun allergy?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Sun allergy<\/strong> = a broad term for different types of abnormal skin reactions to sunlight<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sun rash<\/strong> = the visible symptom (like red bumps or patches), often caused by PLE<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPLE is a rash that appears on sun-exposed areas, usually during the first few times you\u2019re in the sun\u2014like early spring or summer,\u201d Chiyoung explains. \u201cIt\u2019s also more common in people with lighter skin tones.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also highlights another, less common condition:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cSolar urticaria is a chronic photosensitivity that causes hives. While it may feel uncomfortable, PLE is generally harmless. Changes in sun exposure habits, environment, medications, or even your immune response can all play a role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cThis type of sun allergy often starts in adolescence or around your 20s,\u201d Chiyoung explains. \u201cAnd once it appears, it may come back each year.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reassuring part? Your skin can gradually adapt. \u201cAs sun exposure increases throughout the season, the reaction usually becomes milder\u2014or may stop happening altogether.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-who-is-most-likely-to-get-a-sun-allergy\">Who is most likely to get a sun allergy?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sun allergies can affect anyone. If you suspect a sun allergy, your first step should always be to consult a professional for an accurate diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That said, a few simple habits can make a meaningful difference\u2014especially when it comes to PLE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cOne of the most common mistakes is going straight into intense sun exposure after months without it,\u201d Chiyoung says.<\/strong> \u201cYour skin needs time to adapt\u2014just like your body does when getting back into the gym.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-two-key-habits-to-support-your-skin\">Two key habits to support your skin:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1. Ease into sun exposure<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start with short periods outdoors during lower UV hours (before 11 a.m. or after 5 p.m.), gradually increasing exposure over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2. Protect daily with high SPF<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.isdin.com\/us\/blog\/skincare\/sun-protection\/sunscreen-in-winter-and-the-snow\/\">even when it\u2019s cloudy<\/a> or you\u2019re only outside briefly.
