Meanwhile, melanoma is a type of skin cancer that occurs when melanocytes start reproducing uncontrollably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it\u2019s less common than many other types of skin cancer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.org\/cancer\/types\/melanoma-skin-cancer\/about\/what-is-melanoma.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">it\u2019s the most aggressive<\/a>. It can spread very rapidly to other parts of the body. And once melanoma spreads, it\u2019s considered invasive and can potentially become life-threatening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why educating yourself about skin cancer (just like you are right now!) is so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does it look like?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We asked Dr. Puig. &#8220;In general, the first sign of melanoma is a change in a mole\u2019s size, shape, color, or texture,&#8221; she shares. However, it can present differently from person to person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Many melanomas exhibit a bluish or black area and distinct characteristics<\/strong> compared to your other moles, marks, or freckles. She explains, \u201cMelanoma can also appear as a pink lesion that doesn\u2019t go away, a line of color on your fingernail that widens over time, or a new lesion that keeps growing and is dark or reddish, looking different from others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most common form of melanoma in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/types\/skin\/skin-cancer-in-black-or-brown-skin\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">black and brown skin<\/a> occurs on the palms of the hands, the soles of the feet, and the fingers, toes, and nails. Unprotected or extended exposure is what to avoid. That&#8217;s when its rays are more likely to <strong>cause cellular damage<\/strong>, leading to the potential for cancerous and precancerous skin lesions. Melanoma is considered a cancerous lesion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Who\u2019s at risk?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Puig reminds us that anyone can develop skin cancer\u2014but the correct use of sun protection can reduce your risk. &#8220;Protecting yourself from the sun daily is the best strategy to prevent the visible signs of skin aging, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isdin.com\/us\/blog\/skincare\/your-skin\/what-is-actinic-keratosis\/\">actinic keratoses<\/a>, and, most importantly, melanoma and other skin cancers,\u201d she explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, the likelihood of developing melanoma increases in those who:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Have lighter skin tones<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Had repeated sunburns during childhood<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Spend or have spent many hours in the sun<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use or have used tanning beds<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have more than 50 moles or beauty marks<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have a history of skin cancer in the family<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Are 50 years of age or older<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have had an organ transplant (immunosuppression can increase the risk of melanoma)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How can I help protect myself from melanoma?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Puig explains the <strong>three steps that can help you minimize your overall risk of skin cancer<\/strong>: sun protection, self-exams, and visiting your dermatologist. By taking proactive steps to keep your skin healthy and protected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Puig shares her expert advice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705 <strong>Avoid lengthy sun exposure&nbsp;during midday hours<\/strong>, when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.isdin.com\/us\/blog\/skincare\/ultraviolet-radiation-and-your-skin\/\">solar radiation<\/a>&nbsp;is stronger.&nbsp;Remember, the smaller your shadow is, the stronger the sun\u2019s radiation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2705&nbsp;<strong>Always use sunscreen&nbsp;on exposed skin. <\/strong>For proper protection, use a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isdin.com\/us\/blog\/skincare\/sunscreen-faqs-your-questions-answered\/\">high SPF broad spectrum sunscreen<\/a>. Where to start? Dr. Puig shares an expert method: &#8220;Get to know your skin, observing changes and <strong>using what&#8217;s known as the ABCDE technique<\/strong>. Pay attention to skin changes such as new freckles or&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.isdin.com\/us\/blog\/skincare\/understanding-pigmentation-what-you-really-need-to-know\/\">skin pigmentation<\/a>.
