Psoriasis |
Psoriasis is a common skin inflammation (irritation and swelling) characterized by frequent episodes of redness, itching, and thick, dry, silvery scales on the skin. It is not contagious and is suffered by 2-3% of the population. It might appear at any moment between 20 and 50. Eventhough its causes are unkown, there is a hereditary component and some triggering factors such as stress, traumatisms, infections (amigdalitis) and others such as certain medicines and alcohol.
There are multiple treatments. The most commonly used are topic ones such as queratolítics, coritcosteroids, vitamine D3 derivatives (e.g., tacalcitole, calcipotriole, calcitriole) and retinoides. Phototherapy is also widely used (PUVA, UVB) as well as sun baths. For more acute cases of psoriasis there are oral treatments such as inmunedepressors (e.g. ciclosporine), citostatics (e.g., metotrexate) and more recently, biological treatments, some of them still under study. It is very advisable to keep the skin correctly moistened both during the rash and non-rash phases. For more information, consult with your specialist. |
